Plant selection

The program generates a plant list with plants that thrive best in that water.

This is according to the method described by SCHWARZER & SCHWARZER*, from the measured value of the dissolved reactive Phophors a value for the nutrient supply (P) in the ecosystem and the total hardness a value for the reaction of water (R). The resulting R-and P-values correspond to the values described by ELLENBERG for vascular plants of central Europe. In short, the program converts the input of water values into so called Ellenberg values.

This indicator values were determined as ecological preferences among others for all types of aquatic plants in Central Europe by ELLENBERG and colleagues. So it is known that the pondweed (Potamogeton perfoliatus) has the R-value of 7 and the P-value of 6. Should the program, for example, for the tested water determine values of 8, 7 or 6, while for P 5, 6 or 7, it will propose this pondweed for the water adding this species to the list of suitable plants. It is evident that the program is performing with a deviation of 1 up and 1 down, as the indicator values of Ellenberg always represent only an approximation. Plants thus have an ecological amplitude (tolerance) in which they find their optimal growth conditions.
